Des Moines Public Schools has recognized the need to serve the whole child through the Full Service Community School Model. Through the planning process we have identified several focus areas that are necessary in removing barriers to health and education, with one priority being dental care. Scavo High School has been designed with a community center space to host a dental care program with two treatment rooms. The intent of the Full Service model is to partner with a dental service provider to provide access to any student or family, without regard to cost. Through this Full Service Model we are working to eliminate barriers and increase accessibility for our families. In addition we will design a transportation strategy to assist schools when a child is identified as needing the service throughout our district. The school district will provide the space and access to students for our chosen dental partner. Grant funds will assist in appropriately equipping the identified service space in the manner necessary to launch quality dental programming.
For over 100 years, Des Moines Public Schools has been educating the students of Iowa’s capital city. Today, we are the largest provider of public education in Iowa, with more than 33,000 students and nearly 5,000 teachers and staff at work in more than 60 schools throughout the community.
