Children and teens in foster care should be seen early and more often to assess for signs of abuse and neglect, illnesses, and mental health problems; to monitor adjustment to foster care; to ensure access to medical drugs and equipment; and to support parents, both foster and biological. The Foster Care Clinic at Blank Children’s Hospital will bring together a team of DHS case workers, mental health and medical professionals, and birth and foster parents to ensure that children receive timely, individualized and developmentally appropriate care by physicians trained in evidence-based, trauma informed care to improve outcomes and promote support systems for children. Children who are placed into care without an already established medical home will be referred to the Foster Care Clinic. The Foster Care Clinic will act as a resource and model for providers and other professional across Iowa who work with children in foster care
